4 Ways to Keep Your Trees Healthy

December 6, 2017 | Posted by Jake Cubis | in Palm CleaningTree Surgery

Trees are a valuable commodity in any yard for multiple reasons: they provide shade and help you reduce air conditioning costs; they protect wildlife and thus contribute to environment health, and can increase property value by making it more aesthetically pleasing.

Protecting trees by keeping them in great health is an effective way to invest in the long-term look of your landscape, but in order to benefit from this advantage and many others, you need to implement four ways of keeping your trees healthy, with help from Steve Steve Cubis Tree Services:

1. Prune regularly

A tree that is not trimmed regularly will represent a hazard for your property and a risk for those who pass by, eventually causing liability. Wise homeowners contact arborists to inspect their trees and select which branches need to be removed. The dormant winter season is a great time to prune trees before they push out any new growth in the spring. A good tree pruning Lismore specialist will have a look at your tree and recommend you the right course of action in case of:

  • Dead and broken branches
  • Crossing branches
  • Low limb branches

2. Protect tree roots and tree bark

Healthy roots are essential for healthy trees. We can’t see trees’ roots, and yet they are a very important part of any plant. Some of the measures you can take in order to protect tree roots are:

  • Taking care when you dig and aerate around trees to avoid cutting too many roots. Power equipment should be used carefully at the base of trees.
  • Applying a layer of mulch around the tree roots – mulch will retain moisture, protect roots from damage, and maintain a consistent soil temperature. You shouldn’t apply more than 3-4 inches for a mature tree, and make sure you keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent bark from rotting.
  • Avoid soil compaction during home renovation projects. Heavy equipment and material stacks should be kept away from tree areas to avoid compacting soil in your lawn and preventing air and water from reaching tree roots.

As for the bark, apply tree fencing during construction projects. Protection fences are commercially available or can be improvised with stakes and rope.

3. Water effectively

People don’t usually water their trees, but irrigation is recommended in the following cases:

Some tree watering tips you need to consider are watering deeply rather than frequently, avoiding the saturation of soil for long periods, and making sure you water everywhere under the canopy and even further, instead of watering at the roots (this may cause rotting).

4. Maintain a health soil

The quality of soil around your trees will influence their well-being and aspect significantly. Here is some aspects you should take care of:

  • Mulching, whose benefits have been listed earlier
  • Matching tree species with the right soil types
  • Providing supplemental water during periods of drought if your trees need it
  • Finding out what your tree is sensitive to – such as competition from other plants, salt spray, high winds, or drought

Taking care of your garden is like maintaining a living work of art. Among the most important strokes on this natural canvas are your trees and hedges. But how often should they be pruned or trimmed to keep your outdoor masterpiece looking its best? In this blog, we'll guide you through the essentials of tree and hedge maintenance. The Importance of Regular Tree Pruning in Preventing Tree Removal Regular tree pruning is not just about aesthetics; it's a preventive measure that can save you from the costly and often disruptive process of tree removal. Professional Tree Services offer routine pruning and maintenance to keep your landscape looking lush, green and clean. Our team of qualified arborists ensure your trees are healthy and well-maintained, reducing the risk of disease and potential hazards. When Tree Removal Becomes Unavoidable While regular pruning and maintenance can go a long way in preserving the health of your trees, there are instances where removal is the only viable option. Let's look at some of these scenarios: Hazardous Trees: Sometimes, a tree becomes a safety risk and must be removed. Diseased Trees: Despite regular maintenance, some trees contract diseases that are beyond treatment. Property Damage: Trees with invasive roots can cause structural damage, necessitating removal. We are equipped to handle these scenarios safely and efficiently, offering services like stump grinding to ensure a clean finish. Seasonal Considerations for Tree Pruning and Removal The timing of your tree maintenance isn't just a matter of convenience; it's crucial for the health and longevity of your trees. Here's a seasonal guide to help you plan your tree care activities: Spring Ideal for pruning most trees as they are in their growth phase. This is when new buds are forming, making it easier to shape the tree for the year ahead. Summer A good time for removing dead or diseased branches. The trees are in full leaf, making it easier to identify problem areas that need attention. Autumn Avoid pruning; trees are preparing for winter. This is a time when trees are conserving energy and resources, making it less ideal for any form of cutting or trimming. Winter Optimal for tree removal; less impact on the surrounding vegetation. The dormant season minimises stress on the tree, making it a more suitable time for major work like removal. We offer you year-round services to help ensure your trees are well-cared for, no matter the season. Cost Factors: Balancing Tree Pruning and Tree Removal Expenses Investing in regular tree pruning not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your property but can also be a cost-saving measure in the long run. Compared to the significant expense and disruption of tree removal, routine maintenance is a more budget-friendly option.
